InsideOut: As pastor of the Pentecostals of Alexandria, you get to see into hundreds of students’ lives. What is one thing that you admire about this generation?
Anthony Mangun: I admire this generation’s high-tech skills and their development of unique ways to communicate the gospel in a high-tech society.
Our attitude when presenting truth must be right. I don’t believe we accomplish anything by acting arrogant, or being angry, or, God forbid, being mean. The academic environment dictates an academic response. With a smile on our faces, we can present the truths of Scripture in a loving, matter-of-fact manner.
The Word of God is the final rule in all matters of faith and practice. It is vital that everyone, and especially the up and coming generation of the Church, be thoroughly acquainted with its teachings. Its principles are unchanging and will guide the Church regardless of the current culture and any opposition to biblical truth it attempts to bring.
I think young people today very much enjoy the experience of the Spirit and the experience of the services and the experiences they have in church and serving God. I think that it’s possible however to be so experience oriented that we neglect other issues, such as scriptural principles and scriptural truth and things that may not be as sensually exciting, and by that I mean our senses aren’t touched, but they are every bit as important if not more, because they are the anchor of our life. I don’t think it’s either/or. I think you can do both. I think you can certainly enjoy the experiences of God’s Spirit, but you can also be grounded in umbilical truth. Both of those together make a very dynamic life.
InsideOut: Where were you born or raised? DW: I was born in Indianapolis. However, my family only lived there for a few months afterward.
