Apostolic Music Review: From the Depths

Album: From the Depths
Artist: The Branches

The Branches paint beautiful word pictures that make this album very cool and atypical. It starts off with Sounds of the Resistance, an instrumental that sounds like an epic modern war song.

It perfectly sets up the next song, The Resistance. This is the first song I’d ever heard from the The Branches. It’s an extremely empowering song that makes something rise up in you. I love how the lead singer sings, “Ask yourself–what am I fighting for?”

Beyond the Veil kicks off with a soothing rhythmic guitar and vertical praise thanking God for His grace. This song speaks about trusting Jesus for freedom and about the untold mysteries of God we discover beyond the veil.

Chariot is this band’s very cool take on the old song, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” You’ll be singing the chorus, “…I’d stay if I had a reason, but I don’t, so swing low sweet chariot, and carry me home” all day long.

Lean has a country feel to it and speaks once again to the power of leaning on Jesus. The bridge brings hope and reminds us that problems “…won’t last forever, darkness can not steal my dream.”

Savior is the ballad of the album that leaves us reflecting on our need for Jesus.

The lead singer has an incredibly powerful voice with a “raw” quality. The band is super solid, and the arrangements are perfect. This album is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

About the Artist

In April 2010, a group of friends piled into a Suburban and drove eighteen hours from Baton Rouge to play a show in Detroit. While driving through the American heartland, several songs were written in the car, and when the friends arrived at the concert in Detroit, they played those songs for the first time. Not only was there a musical connection between these friends, but God moved that night.

We are those same friends, and after that trip to Detroit, we realized we could make something special. That’s when we became The Branches. Who are we, you may ask? Allow us to introduce ourselves: Grant Perry of Toledo, OH plays acoustic and sings lead vocals. Aaron Cox of Bossier City, LA plays drums. Christian Gaudet of Alexandria, LA plays bass. Caleb Hill of Baton Rouge, LA plays guitar. And finally, Lizzie Hill of Baton Rouge, LA plays keys and sings.

We officially became The Branches in May 2010, when we came together at Little House Productions in Baton Rouge, LA to begin work on our first project. In July 2010, we released our 6-track EP “Letters To Thomas.” That summer, we embarked on a brief tour, playing in Louisiana, Ohio, and North Carolina.
