You Are a Missionary

If you were to have asked me ten years ago if I was called to the mission field I would have said no in the few languages I knew. My vocabulary and knowledge of vernaculars have grown but until recently my initial response would probably still have been no. Now if you were to ask me this question I would have to respond with “yes and you’re called to missions too.”

Now before you close this tab and get back to your online shopping or Facebook stalking let me explain.

According to Matthew 28:19, along with many other verses, we are all called to spread the gospel and the love of our Savior. You cannot have the Great Commission without a mission. Com- is “a prefix meaning ‘with,’ ‘together,’ or ‘in association.’” Together, with the power of the Holy Spirit, and the body of Christ, we can work to fulfill the important task at hand. Even if you feel like you are “going” alone, we are never really unaccompanied.

You may not feel like you are “called” to start a thousand soul revival in Asia or minister to tribes in Peru and that is more than okay. If everyone were called to foreign soil, who would water and work the field right under you? Your mission field could be your office, your neighborhood or your school. Anywhere there is a soul there is a place you can plant a seed of mission that can grow a harvest.

If you submit to Him, God will order every single one of your steps and I promise He will bless you in the process. When you put Him and His kingdom first, He will honor your work. I know it’s not for everyone but I personally love to travel. I do my best to make anywhere I go my great commission field. There is so much God created beauty in the world and I want to behold as much as I possibly can. Part of what makes a place so beautiful is the people that live in it. You can learn a lot from traveling, even if it just across the street.

On a trip back from Australia a few years ago, I was exhausted and jetlag was taking over every ounce of sleep and will power my little body had. I settled down on my third plane of the day, after already flying twenty-hours. The lady to my left was quiet but I made it a point to show her the love of Christ as best I could. It turns out; she ministered to me as well. We talked for most of the plane ride about the Lord and I mentioned to her another trip I was taking in June. The plane touched down and we went our separate ways during our layover. Before I boarded my final flight home she hunted me down and told me she was praying for me. She slipped some money in my hand as a donation for a Youth on Missions trip I have plans to go on.

You see, I could have ignored her and put my nose in a book, but instead, I chose to give God’s kingdom, God’s people’s first priority. This is only one story of many that God has done in my life, but none of them would have happened if I kept His love selfishly to myself.

When I put myself aside, He steps in and with gentle whispers and sometimes-violent efforts, He lets me know that this is His world and I am just a citizen. He wants you to have a part in the Commission too. When Jesus ascended into Heaven, He sat down. He took a seat on the throne and we became His hands and feet to the world around us. Anywhere you go you can be a missionary. When we unite we can help make a positive change. You are well-equipped and well-taken care of. It’s a great big, world out there filled with people who are longing for what you have. Where will you go? Who will reach? You are a missionary. Will you become who you are called to be?
